Companies that embrace containers as a standard quickly run into a quandary: what do you do with all of those existing monolithic applications? Containers are supposed to be small and do one thing well. Doesn’t shoving a multi-gig-sized application with many functions into a single container break those principles? Does it make more sense to try to break the application down first? But that could take months or even years to do! The reality is that there is no one right way to containerize existing applications. Each application must be triaged with several criteria to determine the path forward. Examples of these criteria include the technology stack the application uses, the expected lifespan of the application, ongoing work on the application, development team capacity, how easy it would be to slice off parts of the application, and more.
